A Bosque Farms man pleaded guilty on Apr. 14 in federal court to illegally possessing a firearm after having previous felony and misdemeanor convictions for domestic violence.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address illegal firearm possession by individuals with prior criminal convictions. Such offenses are prohibited under federal law, which aims to prevent further violence and enhance community safety.

According to court documents, Warren Chewiwi, age 52, was found in possession of a 12-gauge shotgun and shotgun shells on July 15, 2024. Because of his earlier felony conviction and a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, Chewiwi was legally barred from owning firearms or ammunition at the time.

Chewiwi admitted guilt to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. He now faces up to 15 years in prison when sentenced and could also be subject to up to three years of supervised release following his prison term. Additionally, he will be required to forfeit the shotgun and ammunition involved in the offense.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison made the announcement regarding Chewiwi's plea. The Isleta Pueblo Police Department conducted the investigation into this case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary C. Jones is responsible for prosecuting it.

The outcome underscores continued collaboration between local police departments and federal prosecutors as they seek accountability for those who violate gun laws.
