Nathaniel Rod Gibson, a 34-year-old from Crawford County, was sentenced on April 9 to 170 months in prison after being convicted of grooming and illegal sexual contact with a minor, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Missouri.
The sentencing highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement and federal prosecutors to address child exploitation cases and protect minors from abuse.
According to court documents, Gibson sent more than 18,996 text messages between March and September of 2023 while grooming the victim with romantic statements. He provided the then-13-year-old victim with a phone and instructed her to delete their communications so her mother would not discover them. In June of that year, Gibson transported the victim from Missouri to an Arkansas campground where he engaged in an illegal sex act with her. Additional incidents occurred at his home in Crawford County.
Gibson pleaded guilty in January before U.S. District Judge Henry E. Autrey to one count each of travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and coercion and enticement of a minor.
The case was investigated by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, Diamond City Police Department in Arkansas, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jillian Anderson prosecuted the case.
This prosecution is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at combating child sexual exploitation through coordinated efforts among federal, state, and local agencies.
