Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent met with Japanese Minister of Finance Satsuki Katayama on April 16 to discuss energy and financial matters. During the meeting, Bessent thanked Katayama for Japan’s leadership in these areas.
The talks highlighted the importance of cooperation between the United States and Japan, particularly following Prime Minister Takaichi’s recent visit to the United States. Bessent reaffirmed the strong alliance between both countries and emphasized a commitment to maintain close communications.
Bessent also referenced Assistant Secretary for Investment Security Chris Pilkerton’s recent activities in Japan related to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). He pledged that the Treasury Department would support Japan as it considers developing its own investment screening mechanism.
The meeting underscores ongoing efforts by both governments to strengthen economic ties and address shared challenges in global finance and energy policy.
