Revival Animal Health announced on Apr. 17 a voluntary recall of its Breeder’s Edge Foster Care Canine and Shelter’s Choice Canine Milk Replacers after finding variable levels of vitamin D in some products.
The company said the recall is important because dogs that consume elevated levels of vitamin D may experience vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. High amounts of vitamin D can cause serious health problems in dogs, including kidney issues.
According to Revival Animal Health, the affected products were sold nationwide both online and in retail pet stores. The items are packaged in various sizes of stand-up resealable bags and 12-ounce jars. Two complaints involving rickets have been reported so far.
The company said it started the recall after an investigation showed inconsistent vitamin D levels—both low and high—in some batches of its canine milk replacers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is aware of this recall.
Consumers who purchased any affected product should stop using it immediately and contact Revival Animal Health for a full refund. Those with questions can call the company at 1-877-870-4059 during business hours.
