Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent met with Minister of Finance and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne of Canada on Apr. 19 to discuss a range of issues including the conflict with Iran, energy markets, and critical minerals collaboration.
The meeting addressed ongoing challenges that affect both countries and emphasized the importance of their partnership. The discussions are seen as significant ahead of the upcoming United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) review.
According to a statement released after the meeting, both officials highlighted "the importance of further strengthening the U.S.-Canada bilateral relationship and of building momentum heading into the USMCA review." They also reviewed progress made in joint efforts on critical minerals.
Secretary Bessent encouraged Canada to continue supporting efforts by the Trump administration aimed at tackling drug trafficking-related illicit financing. The conversation included ways in which both countries can cooperate more closely on this issue.
The talks reflect ongoing collaboration between the United States and Canada on economic security, trade agreements, and regional stability. Future meetings are expected as both nations prepare for further negotiations under USMCA.
