U.S. Attorney Andrew B. Benson announced on April 20 that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine is joining the Department of Justice and communities across the country to observe National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW). The observance highlights achievements in victims’ rights and emphasizes ongoing efforts to support crime victims.
The annual NCVRW aims to raise awareness about the needs and rights of crime victims, as well as available services for those affected by crime. Since its start in 1981, NCVRW has encouraged communities nationwide to address barriers facing victims seeking justice. The theme for 2026 is "LISTEN. ACT. ADVOCATE." with a focus on protecting victims and serving communities.
Benson said, “The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine is committed to prosecuting those who violate federal law and collaborating with law enforcement to hold offenders accountable through the justice system.” He continued, “We recognize, however, that prosecuting offenders is only one piece of an integrated approach in recognizing and supporting victims of crime.”
The office works with prosecutors and victim specialists to ensure that victims are heard throughout legal proceedings—a process seen as important for healing and providing a sense of justice. NCVRW also serves as a reminder that various victim services are available through community partners and professionals dedicated to safety.
According to the official website, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maine enhances quality of life through law enforcement efforts throughout the state; it prosecutes federal crimes, handles civil matters involving government interests, collects debts owed federally, builds alliances with agencies at all levels, operates offices in Portland and Bangor, covers all regions statewide, and serves as chief federal law enforcement officer.
