Kyle man sentenced to federal prison for stealing checks

Lyle Dean Misun Tibbits, a 33-year-old man from Kyle, South Dakota, was sentenced on April 20 to one year in federal prison after pleading guilty to larceny. The sentencing was announced by United States Attorney Ron Parsons.

Tibbits’s case highlights the enforcement of federal laws in Indian Country and the role of the U.S. Attorney's Office in prosecuting such crimes. According to the official website, the U.S. Attorney for the District of South Dakota is responsible for enforcing federal laws and advancing community safety throughout the district according to the official website.

Tibbits admitted that while working on a ranch in Kyle during June 2025, he stole several blank checks from his employer. Between June and July 2025, he wrote nearly $10,000 worth of checks payable to himself and another person before cashing them for personal use. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2025 and pleaded guilty on January 9, 2026.

Judge Camela C. Theeler ordered Tibbits to serve three years of supervised release following his prison term and pay $9,880 in restitution as well as a $100 special assessment fee to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. "This matter was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office because the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandates that certain crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian Country be prosecuted in Federal court as opposed to State court," Parsons said.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety investigated this case with Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson handling prosecution duties.

The office led by Parsons also supports initiatives aimed at improving public safety and quality of life according to its official website. It serves as chief law enforcement office for all criminal prosecutions and civil cases across South Dakota according to its official website, tracing its roots back to 1861 according to its official website.
