Daniel Bangura, age 22, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced on Apr. 24 to a prison term of 66 months for his involvement in the July 2023 killing of Donald Childs. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.
The case is significant as it addresses the consequences faced by those who assist or enable violent crimes, even if they are not the direct perpetrators. Bangura pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice on January 13, while his co-defendant Iesha Marks pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed on the same day and is scheduled for sentencing on June 12.
According to government evidence presented in court, Bangura drove Marks to Farragut Street Northwest where she fired multiple shots from a vehicle window into a busy intersection, fatally striking Mr. Childs who was standing on the sidewalk. Afterward, Bangura drove Marks out of state to Pennsylvania with the purpose of disposing of the murder weapon.
"Today’s sentencing reflects the serious consequences that come with participating in senseless violence," said U.S. Attorney Pirro. "The defendant may not have pulled the trigger, but he played an undeniable role in the death of an innocent man standing on his own street." The Honorable Danya A. Dayson ordered that Bangura serve three years under supervised release following his prison sentence.
Bangura has been held since May 2025 when he was indicted in this case. Interim Chief Jeffery W. Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department joined Pirro in announcing the sentence and commended investigators and Assistant U.S. Attorney Yasmin Emrani for their work prosecuting this case.
