A Seattle man was sentenced on April 27 to more than 27 years in federal prison for a series of violent carjackings and firearms offenses, according to First Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Neil Floyd. Maar Teng Rambang, age 25, was convicted earlier this year of three counts of carjacking and three counts of using a firearm during crimes of violence stemming from a crime spree across King County on November 7, 2022.
The sentencing underscores the serious nature of the offenses and their impact on victims and community safety. The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington promotes community safety through programs addressing gun violence and online threats, according to the official website.
At Rambang's sentencing hearing in U.S. District Court in Seattle, Judge John H. Chun described the acts as “serious, terrible crimes” that caused physical injury to one victim and psychological harm to all three victims involved. Floyd said, “This defendant violently threatened two people and shot a third and then drove at a high rate of speed recklessly throughout King County.” He added: “It is just by luck that no one was killed in this crime spree. The mandatory minimum sentenced for this crime means this 27-year sentence is required and appropriate for this dangerous, violent conduct.”
Court records show that Rambang's actions spanned multiple cities including Kent, Bellevue, Redmond, Seattle, and Renton. He first confronted a woman outside the Kent East Hill Post Office at gunpoint before moving through other locations where he fired his weapon during another carjacking attempt and shot another victim while stealing his vehicle. Law enforcement eventually apprehended him after he led officers on a high-speed chase reaching up to 100 miles per hour.
Prosecutors wrote in their memo: “Although the impacts of Rambang’s crime spree were extremely serious, it is fortunate that the results were not worse. Considering that he pointed a loaded gun at multiple victims and discharged it twice – and led police on a high-speed chase driving recklessly through busy streets – Rambang is fortunate that he is not being sentenced for felony murder, vehicular assault/homicide, and the like.”
The case was investigated by several local police departments with assistance from federal agencies such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco & Explosives (ATF). The U.S. Attorney’s Office operates offices in Seattle and Tacoma according to its official website.
The office handles federal prosecutions as well as civil litigation throughout Western Washington areas including Seattle and Tacoma according to its official website. It employs about 85 attorneys with approximately 70 support staff members as reported by its official website.
Additionally, the office enforces federal criminal laws alongside law enforcement partners; provides legal counsel; protects civil rights; staffs over 150 people; leads drug court programs; according to its official website.
Rambang will also serve three years under supervised release following his incarceration.
