Jefferson County woman charged in federal tax return fraud scheme

A Beaumont woman, Chrysantha Wilson, was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 28 for allegedly assisting in the preparation of fraudulent federal tax returns, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.

Wilson faces 40 counts related to the alleged scheme and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Christine L. Stetson for her initial appearance and arraignment. If convicted, she could face up to three years in federal prison for each count.

The case is being investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Raynaldo P. Morin. "A federal indictment is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law," said Combs.

The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas supports victims of crime through dedicated services, according to the official website. The office operates locations in Beaumont, Lufkin, Plano, Sherman, Texarkana and Tyler according to its official website.
