House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity Chairman Rep. Derrick Van Orden, along with Chairman Mike Bost, Rep. Juan Ciscomani, Rep. Tom Barrett, and Rep. Jen Kiggans, introduced the VA Home Loan Affordability Act (H.R. 8532) on Apr. 29. The bill aims to reduce bureaucratic barriers in the Department of Veterans Affairs Home Loan program and modernize it for current homebuying standards.

The legislation is intended to help veterans, active-duty servicemembers, and their families by making the homebuying process faster and more efficient through the VA program.

Van Orden said, “The VA Home Loan program is one of the most powerful tools we have to expand economic opportunity for veterans and their families, and it must keep pace with today’s housing market.” He continued, “The VA Home Loan Affordability Act ensures veterans can access a faster, more efficient path to homeownership. This is a decisive step to strengthen a program that has already helped millions and ensure it continues delivering for the next generation of American heroes.”

Chairman Bost said, “House Republicans are working around the clock to expand pro-growth opportunities for everyday American families, including America’s veterans and servicemembers...This bill would cut through needless regulations and processes in the VA home loan program, reduce closing costs, and bring the VA home loan program in line with other federal housing programs to get veterans, servicemembers, and their families in their new homes faster.”

Rep. Ciscomani added that "Homeownership is a cornerstone of the American Dream," emphasizing that outdated bureaucracy should not delay benefits for those who served. Kiggans said she supports aligning the VA home loan program with other federal programs so "our veterans deserve a system that puts them first." Barrett stated that competitive loans have already helped many buy homes after service but improvements are needed: "The VA Home Loan Affordability Act will modernize this life-changing program by updating outdated rules...and getting veterans into homes faster."

Industry stakeholders also voiced support for the act. Rocket Mortgage said they appreciate efforts "to reduce costs and improve access" while Freedom Mortgage noted its appreciation for continued focus on modernization.

As Congress considers H.R. 8532 further steps may be taken toward making these changes law.
