Man sentenced to prison for embezzling $434,000 from St. Louis medical business

U.S. District Judge Rodney W. Sippel sentenced Talon Lewis on Apr. 28 to one year and one day in prison for embezzling $434,000 from a medical business in the St. Louis area and ordered him to repay the stolen funds.

Lewis’s actions took place between Oct. 21, 2019, and at least Feb. 19, 2025, while he worked as an accounts payable specialist at the company. He was responsible for uploading lists of patients due refunds but instead directed refund checks to himself or acquaintances by adding their names—sometimes using false identities—to these lists. Fourteen people were recruited by Lewis to participate in the scheme; they would return thirty percent of their fraudulent gains back to him, which he then spent on personal expenses and local casinos.

As part of his sentence, Judge Sippel also prohibited Lewis from gambling or entering gambling establishments during his three-year supervised release period.

"The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is charged with defending the nation’s mail system from illegal use. With the collaborative efforts of our federal law enforcement partners, Postal Inspectors investigate fraudsters who utilize the U.S. Mail to perpetuate financial schemes to defraud others to enrich themselves. Postal Inspectors seek justice for victims including those most vulnerable," said Acting Inspector in Charge Nicholas Bucciarelli of the Chicago Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Lewis pleaded guilty in January to one count of mail fraud related to this case.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Derek Wiseman.
