President Donald J. Trump released a statement on May 4 commemorating the 84th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea, honoring both American and Australian forces who fought together during World War II. The President said this battle marked a turning point in the Pacific campaign against tyranny and helped establish a lasting partnership between the two nations.
The message highlights how, for four days, American and Australian forces carried out air strikes against an invasion fleet in what was described as "the first ever carrier-to-carrier naval engagement in military history." According to Trump, "After enduring days of intense combat, Allied forces struck with precision, halting a major enemy advancement through the Pacific Theatre and delivering a critical blow to its naval strength, ultimately paving the way for the decisive victory at Midway a month later."
Trump said that from this battle emerged an alliance that remains strong today. He stated: "Out of the ashes of that hard-won triumph emerged an alliance between the United States and Australia that remains stronger than ever before—and my Administration is fully committed to deepening our strategic partnership in the years to come." He also referenced an agreement reached last October with Australia regarding rare earth and critical minerals.
Reflecting on those who served during World War II, Trump said: "As we reflect on this solemn anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea, we honor the unwavering grit of our service members and remember those heroes who willingly laid down their lives in defense of freedom." He added that standing together with Australia would help promote peace and stability throughout Indo-Pacific regions.
The President concluded by emphasizing continued cooperation between both countries as they look toward future security challenges.
