Chairman Cassidy leads Senate HELP Committee hearing on health care affordability in Louisiana

Senator Bill Cassidy, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, led a field hearing in Baton Rouge on May 5 to discuss how Congress can make health care more affordable for American families.

The topic is important as many Americans face rising premiums and significant out-of-pocket costs when seeking medical care. The hearing focused on legislative efforts to reduce these expenses and empower patients with more choices.

"When you speak to people right now in Louisiana or across the country, the ability to afford things is the biggest issue. One example is health care; way too expensive," said Dr. Cassidy. "Premiums are climbing and even those with coverage face thousands of dollars of out-of-pocket costs when they seek care." He added, "By putting money in the patient’s pocket, delivering price transparency, the MVP Agenda delivers what people in Louisiana have asked for; health care they can afford, with power in their hands."

Witnesses at the hearing included Ronnell Nolan of Health Agents for America; Debbie Rowell from Acadian Coffee Roasters; Kathy Oubre from Pontchartrain Cancer Center; and TJ Woodard from Prescriptions to Geaux. They supported Cassidy's approach to increasing patient control over health spending.

Cassidy highlighted recent legislative actions such as his PBM Reform Act being signed into law by President Trump and emphasized efforts like expanding TrumpRx that aim to provide direct access and transparent pricing for prescription drugs. He also discussed his Money and Value for Patients (MVP) agenda: "Instead of sending dollars through layers of insurers and middlemen, this approach puts resources directly in patients’ hands and empowers them with information they need to choose the best care." Cassidy said he wants families not to worry about choosing between medical bills or basic needs: "No parent should have to make that decision."

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee works on public health legislation while overseeing agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH), according to the official website. In addition to legislating on issues affecting workers' rights and retirement programs nationwide during this Congress under Cassidy's leadership according to the official website, it influences federal regulations across multiple sectors.

Cassidy concluded by thanking witnesses for their input: "I thank the witnesses for being here and look forward to hearing their ideas on how we can make health care more affordable for Louisianians."
