Gainesville man sentenced to 46 months in prison for bank robbery

Patrick Shane Johnson, a 51-year-old resident of Gainesville, Florida, was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to charges of bank robbery and larceny, according to a May 6 announcement by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

Heekin said: “Thanks to the lightning-fast response of the Gainesville Police Department, this violent criminal was quickly caught and now my office has ensured he will be kept off our streets for several years. This is yet another successful prosecution under Operation Take Back America, which launched under the direction of President Donald J. Trump to devote the full might of the Department of Justice toward removing violent criminals like this defendant from our communities to deliver the safe streets our citizens deserve.”

According to court documents, Johnson entered a Wells Fargo bank on Archer Road on August 27, 2025. He handed a note to a teller stating it was an armed robbery and demanded money. Johnson took over $1,000 in cash before fleeing but was apprehended immediately by officers from the Gainesville Police Department.

Chief Moya of the Gainesville Police Department said: “A violent threat inside a bank is every employee’s nightmare, but because of the immediate response by our officers, this dangerous offender was taken back into custody within moments.” FBI Jacksonville Special Agent in Charge Jason Carley also commented: "The sentencing of this repeat offender reflects the seriousness of recidivism among violent offenders and the danger it poses to the public. We will continue working closely with our partners to pursue repeat offenders and protect our communities.”

The case resulted from a joint investigation between local police and federal agents. Assistant United States Attorney Christie S. Utt prosecuted Johnson's case.

Operation Take Back America is described as an initiative using resources from across the Department of Justice with aims including addressing illegal immigration and targeting transnational criminal organizations.

The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida enforces federal laws and protects civil rights in northern Florida while collaborating with law enforcement agencies through initiatives such as Project Safe Childhood and serving counties including Tallahassee and Pensacola, according to its official website.
