21-year-old Cedar Rapids man sentenced to federal prison for illegal gun possession

A Cedar Rapids man was sentenced on May 7 to 51 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm as a felon.

Devieon Jermaine-Oliver Irvin, age 21, admitted during his December 3, 2025, plea that he illegally possessed a loaded gun while on state probation. The sentencing took place before United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids.

According to court documents, police began investigating Irvin while looking into a theft and discovered he had been exchanging text messages with a 13-year-old juvenile. In these messages, Irvin and the juvenile discussed Irvin providing drugs to the minor. On March 13, 2025, officers searched Irvin’s residence in Marion and found a loaded firearm hidden in the living room couch. At the time of this incident, Irvin was already prohibited from having firearms due to his status as a convicted felon.

Irvin received a sentence of just over four years in prison followed by three years of supervised release. There is no parole available in the federal system. He is currently being held by the United States Marshal’s Service until he can be transported to federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Nicole L. Nagin and investigated by both the Marion Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution falls under Operation Take Back America—a national initiative focused on combating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protecting communities from violent crime perpetrators.

The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa covers prosecution across more than 25,120 square miles including Cedar Rapids and Sioux City offices; it represents over one million residents throughout its jurisdiction while prosecuting crimes such as this one according to the official website.
