Tyshan Murray, a 44-year-old resident of Elizabeth, New Jersey, was sentenced on May 7 to 18 months in prison and three years of supervised release for unlawfully transporting aliens who entered the United States illegally. The sentence was handed down by Chief United States District Judge Christina Reiss after Murray pleaded guilty to the charge.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by federal authorities to address illegal crossings at the northern border and enforce immigration laws. According to court records, on September 8, nine citizens of Ireland crossed into the U.S. near Drew Road in Richford, Vermont. Murray picked up five adults and four children close to the U.S.-Canada border before being stopped by Border Patrol agents responding to reports of an unlawful crossing.
During the traffic stop, agents found three adults and three young children in rear seats and two additional children sitting on luggage in the cargo compartment. The government requested a longer sentence of 33 months due to what it described as reckless endangerment of unrestrained children and Murray’s prior criminal history involving multiple incarcerations.
First Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan A. Ophardt said: “The smuggling of aliens across our northern border creates significant national security risks and endangers the lives of the people unlawfully entering our country. Those like Tyshan Murray, who reap illicit profit from alien smuggling, should receive significant punishment.”
Murray was represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Barclay Johnson while Assistant United States Attorney Andrew C. Gilman prosecuted the case. This prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America, which aims to address illegal immigration and dismantle transnational criminal organizations.
The U.S. Attorney for the District of Vermont enforces federal laws and manages civil cases for the United States while partnering with agencies to boost public safety and safeguard civil rights; it operates offices in Burlington and Rutland according to its official website.
