Taylor Fresh Foods is recalling dips, salsa and guacamole products made with jalapeño peppers due to possible Salmonella contamination, the Food and Drug Administration announced Aug. 8.
The recall affects products sold under the Trader Joe’s and Freshness Guaranteed brand names, among others. Products were distributed nationwide, the FDA said.
The recall is linked to a multistate Salmonella outbreak first identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Aug. 5. The FDA said the contamination traces back to a supplier-level event involving jalapeño peppers.
Additional downstream products are expected to be identified as the investigation widens, the FDA said. The agency is coordinating the response with the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service and the CDC.
Salmonella infection typically causes diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps that begin six hours to six days after exposure. Most people recover without treatment, but severe cases can require hospitalization, particularly among young children, elderly adults and people with compromised immune systems.
Consumers who have purchased the affected products should not eat them and should either discard them or return them to the place of purchase, the FDA said.
The recall touching major national retailers including Trader Joe’s is expected to affect millions of consumers. The FDA said it will provide updates as the investigation identifies additional products.
