Two men from Montclair, New Jersey, and a man from Kent, Washington, pleaded guilty in late July to charges related to supporting the Islamic State of Iraq and al Sham (ISIS), U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer announced on July 20.
Tomas-Kaan Jimenez-Guzel, 19, and Milo Sedarat, 21, both of Montclair, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Katharine S. Hayden in Newark federal court to terrorism-related offenses. Jimenez-Guzel admitted to conspiracy to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. Sedarat pleaded guilty to concealment of material support and resources for such an organization. Saed Ali Mirreh, 20, of Kent, Washington, also pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Richard A. Jones in Seattle federal court for conspiracy to provide material support.
“Any individual supporting ISIS or other terrorist organizations, regardless of whether it involves organizing an attack, planning to travel overseas, or funding others to join ISIS will be investigated swiftly and prosecuted. Jimenez-Guzel and Mirreh planned to travel abroad to actively fight with ISIS, and Sedarat surreptitiously provided funding for those plans. This Office is committed to disrupting foreign terrorist organizations, preventing ISIS-inspired terrorism, and holding accountable those individuals who support terrorist organizations,” said Frazer.
“These men actively plotted and planned to go overseas to fight with ISIS… FBI Newark Joint Terrorism Task Force and our law enforcement partners thwarted their plans and stopped Jimenez-Guzel as he arrived at the airport… we will tenaciously investigate and arrest anyone supporting and conspiring with terrorists,” said Stefanie Roddy of the FBI Newark.
According to court documents: From July through November 2025, the three communicated via encrypted messaging applications about traveling first from the United States through Turkey then into “sham,” referring historically to the greater Syria region under Arabic terminology—to join ISIS as fighters. In October 2025, Sedarat met with Jimenez-Guzel providing $500 cash intended for Mirreh’s plane ticket; steps were taken by Sedarat specifically using cash rather than electronic transfers while instructing not to bring cell phones during meetings in order not to leave digital traces.
Jimenez-Guzel purchased a plane ticket departing Newark Liberty International Airport on November 17 while Mirreh booked his own out of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on November 16; after arrests occurred involving associates in Michigan accused separately of plotting violent attacks for ISIS, both accelerated their travel arrangements—Jimenez-Guzel rescheduled his flight earlier then was arrested at Newark airport November 4; Mirreh was arrested later that day at his home in Washington state.
Each count carries significant penalties: up to twenty years’ imprisonment plus fines up to $250,000 for conspiracy counts against Jimenez-Guzel and Mirreh; up to ten years’ prison plus similar fine potential regarding the concealment charge against Sedarat—all subject also to terms of life supervised release if imposed by courts upon sentencing scheduled between October–December this year.
