President Trump approved a federal emergency declaration for Washington state, unlocking federal resources to combat rapidly expanding wildfires that prompted the deployment of active-duty soldiers for firefighting support, on Aug. 4.

U.S. Northern Command activated soldiers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord under Defense Support of Civil Authorities to assist with wildfire suppression, NORTHCOM confirmed. The military deployment underscores the severity of the fire emergency, which began Aug. 1 and has escalated rapidly.

The Border 2 Fire in North Cascades National Park grew to approximately 3,500 acres, with structure protection operations active near the Hozomeen area along the U.S.-Canada border, according to the National Park Service. Multiple fires are burning simultaneously within the park.

The emergency declaration unlocks FEMA direct support for firefighting operations and emergency protective measures across the state. FEMA Region 10 is coordinating federal assistance, the agency said.

USDA separately announced disaster assistance for Washington state agricultural producers experiencing simultaneous drought and wildfire damage to crops and livestock, according to the department. Washington is a major national producer of tree fruits, hops, wheat, and dairy products.

The convergence of a presidential emergency declaration, active military deployment, and agricultural disaster assistance illustrates the breadth of federal resources now mobilized by the Washington wildfire emergency. Multiple federal agencies are simultaneously engaged in response operations across the state.

The wildfires come during what fire managers describe as an exceptionally dangerous fire season across the western United States, with elevated fire danger driven by prolonged dry conditions and high temperatures.
