Tyree Irving, 29, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced in D.C. Superior Court to 18 years in prison for the killing of Davane Williams on January 15, 2019, announced U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro on July 27.
Irving pleaded guilty on February 2 to one count of second-degree murder while armed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. On July 24, Judge Neil Kravitz ordered Irving to serve an 18-year prison term followed by five years of supervised release.
According to court records, on January 15, 2019, at approximately 2:59 p.m., Irving approached the Tyler House at the 1200 block of North Capitol Street NW where Williams and several other men were standing outside. Irving had a .40 caliber pistol concealed in his clothing and began yelling at Williams for less than ten seconds before pulling out the pistol and firing five shots at Williams, striking him five times. Afterward, Irving put away the weapon and fled southbound across M Street after changing clothes near the Sursum Corda neighborhood. He was arrested on February 27, 2019, and has remained in custody since then.
Interim Chief Jeffery W. Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department joined U.S. Attorney Pirro in announcing the sentence.
In their announcement regarding sentencing, Pirro and Carroll commended investigators from the Metropolitan Police Department as well as Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joshua Hall and Wes Faulkner, who prosecuted the case.
