A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City indicted Bronson Gary Dean, 51, of Duchesne, Utah, on July 22 for alleged drug and firearm offenses after agents seized approximately 351.8 grams of alpha-pyrrolidinopentiophenone (Alpha-PVP), the main illicit substance found in “bath salts,” and a handgun which Dean is prohibited from possessing.
According to court documents, North Salt Lake Police stopped Dean’s pickup truck on February 23 after observing a traffic violation. Officers said they observed what appeared to be drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle. A search revealed additional paraphernalia including baggies, a digital scale with powder residue, suspected marijuana, and a backpack containing more baggies with a yellowish granular substance as well as a black .45 caliber Kahr CW45 handgun reported stolen. Officers also found laboratory-grade glassware and unknown liquids among various labeled chemical containers.
The Drug Enforcement Administration Clandestine Lab Team responded to the scene. Agents determined that the glassware and chemicals were used in manufacturing synthetic cathinones (“bath salts”). Samples sent to the DEA Southwest Laboratory confirmed the presence of 351.8 grams of Alpha-PVP, which is classified as a schedule I controlled substance.
Dean faces charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of α-Pyrrolidinopentiophenone with intent to distribute. His initial appearance is scheduled for July 27 at the Orrin G. Hatch United States Courthouse before a U.S. Magistrate Court Judge.
United States Attorney Melissa Holyoak announced that the case is being investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and Salt Lake Metro Narcotics Task Force with significant assistance from North Salt Lake Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Seth A. Nielsen will prosecute.
This prosecution falls under the Homeland Security Task Force initiative established by Executive Order 14159 aimed at combating criminal cartels, transnational organizations, human smuggling rings, and other violent crime groups operating domestically or abroad through interagency collaboration involving agencies such as Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), with prosecution led by United States Attorney’s Office for Utah.
An indictment is an allegation; all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in court.
