Boticelli Foods on Aug. 3 recalled Walmart’s Bettergoods brand Pistachio Nut Butter due to possible Salmonella contamination, affecting a product with national distribution across thousands of Walmart locations, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, elderly individuals and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy adults typically experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
The Bettergoods brand is Walmart’s own store label, giving the recalled product a distribution footprint that spans all 50 states. The FDA posted the recall to its safety alerts database on Aug. 3.
Consumers who purchased the pistachio nut butter are advised not to eat it and to return the product to any Walmart location for a full refund.
Salmonella causes approximately 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths annually in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nut butters have been implicated in previous multistate Salmonella outbreaks.
The recall was initiated by the manufacturer after routine testing identified the potential contamination. The FDA monitors consumer complaints and illness reports associated with recalled products.
