Initial unemployment insurance claims rose to 209,000 for the week ending Aug. 8, an increase of 9,000 from the prior week’s revised level, the Department of Labor reported Aug. 13.
The four-week moving average, a less volatile measure that smooths weekly fluctuations, remained at 199,000, indicating a stable underlying trend in the labor market. The claims level remains historically low by long-term standards.
Weekly jobless claims are among the most current leading indicators for labor market health. Financial markets, the Federal Reserve, and policymakers track the data closely for early signals of changes in employment conditions.
The modest uptick draws additional attention following July’s decline of 23,000 in nonfarm payrolls, which represented the first monthly employment loss in recent memory. Any sustained increase in weekly claims could signal a broader labor market softening.
Continued claims, which measure the total number of people receiving ongoing unemployment benefits, were also published in the release. The continued claims figure provides a broader picture of how long unemployed workers are taking to find new positions.
At 209,000, initial claims remain well below levels that economists typically associate with a deteriorating labor market. Weekly claims regularly exceeded 200,000 throughout the pre-pandemic period and were considered consistent with healthy employment conditions at those levels.
The data will be among the inputs Federal Reserve policymakers consider as they assess the economy ahead of their next meeting. The Fed has said it monitors a range of labor market indicators in making interest rate decisions.
State-level claims data, released with a one-week lag, provides detail on which regions are experiencing the largest changes in layoff activity. The Department of Labor publishes claims data every Thursday.
