A 42-year-old Youngstown man was sentenced on July 31 to more than 15 years in prison for attempting to distribute nearly four and a half pounds of cocaine mailed from Puerto Rico to Ohio.

Jean Carlos Martinez received a sentence of 188 months in prison, followed by six years of supervised release, from U.S. District Judge Bridget Meehan Brennan after pleading guilty in April to Attempted Possession with Intent to Distribute Cocaine. Martinez admitted that he intended to distribute the cocaine found inside the package.

According to court documents, postal inspectors seized a parcel on Jan. 23, 2025, that had been mailed from Puerto Rico to Campbell, Ohio. Investigators delivered the parcel to its intended address and observed Martinez arrive shortly thereafter to collect it. Laboratory analysis later confirmed the package contained approximately 2,003.9 grams of cocaine.

The case was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Drug Enforcement Administration-Detroit Division. Assistant United States Attorney Adam J. Joines prosecuted the case for the Northern District of Ohio.

The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio is responsible for enforcing federal criminal laws related to national security and public corruption, promoting community safety through outreach and victim services across northern Ohio, collaborating with schools and law enforcement agencies, defending civil suits against the United States, and covering forty northern counties within its jurisdiction as part of federal law enforcement efforts, according to the official website.
