Fort Raleigh National Historic Site To Be Featured on PBS Program

News Release: On July 8, 2009, 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET, a new series entitled “Time Team America" premieres on PBS television channel WUNC-TV. Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, the first English settlement in America and one of the locations where our country’s history began, will be featured on this first of this five part series with an examination of findings in a recent three day archaeological dig of areas at the site.

News Release: Throughout much of Florida's famed Everglades, an invasive, light-green vine called Old World climbing fern now cloaks the forest floor. Besides smothering shrubs and even small trees with its dense, spongy mats, the intrusive fern, known to scientists as Lygodium microphyllum, also forms soft, twining stems that climb tree trunks. Underneath this layer of living fern, dry, dead lygodium stems accumulate, boosting the wildfire hazard.


Panther Creek Fire Update II

News Release: The Panther Creek Fire (pdf 118k) is located within Ross Lake National Recreation Area. The fire was detected on June 28. It was started by lightning during a series of electric storms that moved through the area in June.


News Release: This morning, a 54-year-old woman from Enid, Oklahoma, was posing for a photograph next to Glacier Creek along Bear Lake Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. She slipped and fell and was swept 15 to 20 yards downstream before she was able to pull herself up on a rock and hold on to a shrub. Her husband drove to Moraine Park Visitor Center to get help.


Lassen Volcanic National Park Plans to take advantage of a warmer and drier weather pattern to implement the Crescent Prescribed Fire

News Release: Lassen Volcanic National Park plans to initiate the Crescent Prescribed Fire Project on Wednesday, July 8th or Thursday, July 9th. The recent cool, wet weather has prohibited fire crews from igniting the prescribed fire. Park staff decided to delay the project last week due to the Independence Day Holiday.

News Release: While thousands of visitors came to experience the beauty of Yosemite National Park July 4, fire personnel continued to manage the Grouse and Harden fires in the Park. The Grouse Fire is three miles southwest of Yosemite Valley and north of Glacier Point Road. The Grouse Fire is 2,300 acres and 50 percent contained. The Harden Fire on the north side of the park, west of Harden Lake and northwest of White Wolf is currently 1,594 acres and 75 percent contained.
