'We are super excited': NNCC to host horse adoption auction June 26

The Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC)/Stewart Conservation Camp Saddle Horse and the Burro Training Program are saddling up to host a horse adoption event that is taking place on Saturday, June 26.

The NNCC and the Burro Training Program link up as a cooperative partnership between The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Nevada Department of Corrections-Silver State Industries.

"We are super excited about this next adoption, in person, Saturday, June 26. Come out and see them," a BLM representative said in a Youtube video. "Take a quick look at them, there are some good ones out there."

With a holding capacity of 2,000 animals, the NNCC also delivers a training program, leveraging inmates to train wild horses which will then be made available for adoption to the public.

The horses that were once wild will range in age from three to seven years old and come in a variety of weights and colors.

Every year, 60-80 wild horses and burros are trained and adopted at the facility, with each wild horse or burro receiving approximately 120 days of training, remaining “green-broke.” When they find their new home, they will need training daily and to be handled by an experienced rider.

The program has three to four adoptions annually with all wild horses and burros offered through a bid adoption that is competitive. Prospective adopters have the opportunity to see the wild horses and burros and speak with their trainers before each adoption starts. The animals will only be offered once during the auction. Adopters are required to take care of the horse or burro for a year before applying for a title, which will then give ownership to the adopter.

Potential adopters are required to fill out an adoption application before they place bids, completing all fields and bringing it with on the day of adoption. They can also fill out the application the same morning of the event. After a BLM staff member reviews the application they will then give the potential adopter their bidder card.
