BLM imposes restrictions on Black Rock Desert Playa due to concerns over 'emergencies'

As severe drought conditions continue, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has imposed restrictions on the Black Rock Desert Playa in Nevada.

Visitors are prohibited from building or burning structures, discharging fireworks, dumping grey or black water and much more.

“We encourage public land users to enjoy their stay and remind them to respect the communities they pass through in route to public lands,” Mark Hall, Black Rock Field Office manager, said in a statement. “We also want to stress that all visitors to the Black Rock Desert playa should be self-sufficient. There are no medical (or) emergency resources close to the playa and multiple emergencies may result in extended response times.”

In addition, visitors are advised to have an understanding of current fire risk levels, construct campfires in a fire pan and to bring secondary containment for fuel reserves to prevent leaking and spilling.

Vehicles and trailers must be compliant with state regulations and camping is limited to un-vegetated and flat playa surfaces only.

The restrictions will continue through at least Oct. 31.

More information can be obtained by contacting the Black Rock Field Office at 775-623-1500 and a full list of restrictions can be found here.

Established in 1946 by President Harry Truman, the BLM recently celebrated its 75th anniversary.

The BLM is responsible for managing a broad range of America's natural, historical and cultural resources. The bureau oversees approximately 245 million acres of public land, approximately one-tenth of America’s total landmass.
