CHICAGO, IL – To raise awareness about the hazards in the trenching and excavation industry, including potentially deadly trench collapses, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is joining with industry leaders, union leaders, and safety professionals for three Trench Safety Conferences, April 9-11, 2019, in the Chicago area.
The goal is to increase awareness of trenching hazards in construction, educate employers, and employees on safe cave-in prevention solutions, and decrease the number of trench collapses. Every year, more than 50 workers suffer fatal injuries in trench-related activities, and thousands more are injured in improperly shored or unstable trenches. The Trench Safety Conferences will feature presentations on soil mechanics, shoring equipment, trench safety regulations, and trench rescue and recovery.
"The Trench Safety Conferences will not only include demonstrations, but also a presentation from a trench collapse survivor," said OSHA Naperville Area Director Jake Scott. "OSHA and industry partners will work together to help prevent trench-related injuries, and ensure that workers are properly trained, and required protections are in place."
