Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today released the following statement applauding former President Jimmy Carter’s support for the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA): “President Carter is a strong voice for peace and democracy around the world. His endorsement of CAFTA reflects his deep and long-standing advocacy for human rights and economic freedom. It also recognizes that if we support democracy and stability throughout our hemisphere, America prospers.

“President Carter’s progressive ideas and concern for workers rights in Central America, for jobs here at home, and for security and prosperity for our hemisphere is a great testament to the wisdom of supporting CAFTA.”
