I applaud the Senate Commerce Committee for their hard work on the Magnuson-Stevens Act today. This legislation is an important step toward achieving the President's commitment to ending overfishing and rebuilding America's fisheries.
Magnuson-Stevens emphasizes the important role of ecosystem-based approaches to fisheries management and of strengthening penalties for violations. We are pleased this legislation also closely reflects the recommendations the Administration submitted to Congress earlier this year and is one of the top priorities of the President's Ocean Action Plan.
I look forward to continuing to work with the Committee to find common ground in our mission to develop a market based approach to fisheries management, end overfishing and rebuild America’s fisheries.
