U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke today released a statement on the passing of Dr. Dorothy Height.
“Dr. Dorothy Height was a towering pioneer in the struggle for equality, empowerment and justice for all,” Locke said. “Her life story was one of commitment to human progress and service to our nation.” Dr. Height recently recorded a public service announcement for the U.S. Census Bureau to encourage public participation in the 2010 Census. At the request of Dr. Height’s staff, television stations are encouraged to continue airing the spot in honor of her legacy.
“This is an issue that Dr. Height cared deeply about,” said Avis Jones-Deweever, director of research and policy at the National Council of Negro Women. “She would have wanted her message of inclusion to continue to be echoed.” In the PSA, Dr. Height says, “You have the right to be counted. It is your civic duty. Don't let anybody or anything stop you.” Dr. Height’s PSA can be viewed here.
