ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHCROFT ANNOUNCES DESIGNATION OF INTERIM LEADERSHIP TEAM IN THE ANTITRUST DIVISION R. HEWITT PATE TO SERVE AS ACTING ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL

Hewitt Pate to serve as the Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division following the departure of Assistant Attorney General Charles James on Nov. 22, 2002. James announced in October that he will step down as Assistant Attorney General to serve as the Vice President and General Counsel of Chevron Texaco Corporation. Pate has served as the Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Regulatory Matters at the Antitrust Division since June 2001.

Deputy Assistant Attorney General Deborah P. Majoras will serve as the second ranking person at the Division and will work closely with Mr. Pate in leading the Division through the transitional period. 02-674
