Gonzales today announced the appointment of Courtney Simmons Elwood to serve as Deputy Chief of Staff at the Department of Justice. Elwood succeeds Kyle Sampson, who now serves as the Department's Chief of Staff.
Elwood has served as Counselor to the Attorney General since February 2005. Prior to joining the Department, she served as Deputy Counsel to the Vice President from 2003 to 2005, and as Associate Counsel to the President from 2001 to 2002. She practiced law at the Washington, D.C., firm of Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd & Evans from 1996 to 2001, after clerking for Chief Justice William Rehnquist of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge J. Michael Luttig of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Elwood earned her law degree from the Yale Law School, where she served on the editorial board of the Yale Law Journal. She earned her undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, from Washington and Lee University. 05-523
