FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, Aug. 15, 2008 WWW.USDOJ.GOV CRM (202) 514-2007 TDD (202) 514-1888 WASHINGTON – Bradley Hanaback, 34, a would-be sex tourist from Saskatchewan, Canada, was sentenced today to four years in prison, after pleading guilty to arranging a trip to Mexico for the purpose of having sex with a minor, Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Friedrich of the Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona Diane J. Humetewa announced. U.S. District Judge Susan R. Bolton also ordered Hanaback to serve a lifetime of supervised release following his release from prison.
Hanaback pleaded guilty in March 2008 to one count of travel with intent to have sex with a minor. In his guilty plea, Hanaback admitted that on Oct. 23, 2007, he was in Arizona en route to Mexico to have sex with what he believed was a 10-year-old boy. According to the factual statement, Hanaback had previously responded to an advertisement for a child sex tour in Mexico, and paid a $50 deposit in order to arrange this trip. After Hanaback confirmed his desire to engage in various sex acts with a 10-year-old boy, he was arrested by federal agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The case was prosecuted by Trial Attorney James Silver of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section and Senior Litigation Counsel Vincent Q. Kirby of the District of Arizona. The investigation was handled by ICE. 08-731
