Texas Department of Transportation launches campaign targeting speeding-related crashes

Speeding remains a major factor in traffic accidents across Texas, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). In 2024, nearly 160,000 crashes were attributed to speeding, resulting in 1,467 deaths. This accounts for 35% of all traffic fatalities in the state and makes speeding the leading cause of such incidents.

“Speeding is not an accident, it’s a choice,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “When you choose to drive even just a little over the speed limit, you’re not only risking your own life, you’re risking the lives of every other person on the road with you and that’s not being a good Texan.”

To address this issue, TxDOT has launched its Be Safe. Drive Smart. campaign. The effort features country singer-songwriter Parker McCollum encouraging Texans to slow down and prioritize safety on the roads.

The campaign coincides with an increased law enforcement period focused on speeding drivers. From July 18 through August 3, officers throughout Texas will increase their attention on motorists exceeding speed limits and remind them to adjust their driving according to road conditions.

TxDOT advises drivers to match their speed with current road conditions and allow extra stopping distance when traffic is heavy or roads are slick or under construction. Drivers are also reminded that fines double for speeding in school zones or work zones when workers are present.

The Be Safe. Drive Smart. campaign is part of TxDOT’s broader Drive like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe. initiative aimed at promoting responsible driving habits statewide.
