Biden calls on U.S. to sharply cut methane pollution

At the COP26 summit held last week, President Joe Biden talked about cutting off methane levels by 30%, stating it is responsible for putting the climate and public health in danger.

"As global leaders convene at this pivotal moment in Glasgow for COP26, it is now abundantly clear that America is back and leading by example in confronting the climate crisis with bold ambition," EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan said in a press release.

This is the first time that the U.S. government has heavily regulated methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Even though the federal government, under the leadership of Obama, rolled out some rules trying to regulate methane, they were all taken back during the Trump administration.

Methane traps heat approximately 30 times more than carbon dioxide over 100 years, according to the EPA.

The EPA said if there are sharp cuts of methane gas over the next decade, there will be a near-term beneficial impact on the climate.
