Statement by Secretary Johnson on Secret Service Role in Operation Sunset

The following press release was published by the US Department of Homeland Security on Nov. 17, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

For Immediate Release Office of the Press Secretary Contact: 202-282-8010 I congratulate the United States Secret Service for their role in Operation Sunset, a major anti-counterfeit currency operation in Peru. Operation Sunset resulted in the seizure of nearly $30 million dollars and 50,000 Euros in counterfeit currency and a large amount of counterfeiting production equipment, the execution of 54 search warrants, and 48 arrests. The Secret Service office in Lima has worked tirelessly with the Peruvian National Police on training and support for this operation. This is only the latest example of the professionalism, expertise, and dedication the men and women of the U.S. Secret Service demonstrate every day.

Peru is the world’s largest manufacturer and distributor of counterfeit U.S. currency, so Operation Sunset is a significant achievement. Again, I congratulate the U.S. Secret Service and the Peruvian National Police for the safe and successful execution of a large and important operation. Secretary Jeh Johnson
