KEENE, Calif. – On Wednesday, Aug. 24, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and U.S. Small Business Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet will tour César E. Chávez National Monument and participate in a town hall discussion to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. Secretary Jewell’s visit will highlight the National Park Service’s role in preserving our shared historic and cultural heritage, and the importance of telling inclusive stories that recognize the increasingly diverse makeup of American communities.
César E. Chávez National Monument, located in the Tehachapi Mountains northeast of Los Angeles, protects the home and workplace of civil rights leader César Chávez and tells the powerful story of his efforts to seek a better life for farm workers and their families. President Obama designated César E. Chávez National Monument in October 2012 to recognize César Chávez and the struggles and accomplishments of the farm worker movement.
