U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued a detainer for Nina Kristina Jaaskelainen, a Finnish national who has been living in the United States illegally since 1999. The action follows her arrest by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office after an incident in New Smyrna, Florida, where she allegedly threw coffee on a mother, her infant son, and their dog during a confrontation about the dog not being leashed.

Jaaskelainen was taken into custody and charged with battery and domestic violence. ICE filed the detainer with the Volusia County Jail on November 15, 2025, aiming to prevent her release back into the community.

“For over TWO DECADES, Jaaskelainen has been in our country illegally, skirting the law without consequence. Now, a baby, a mother, and a dog have been assaulted by her,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.“She is now facing charges for battery and domestic violence. ICE lodged an arrest detainer to ensure she can never victimize another American family. President Trump and Secretary Noem will not allow illegal aliens to terrorize American citizens.”

According to ICE officials, Jaaskelainen entered the U.S. on April 17, 1999 with a B2 tourist visa that required her departure by July 16 of that year but remained unlawfully for more than two decades.

The Department of Homeland Security stated its commitment to protecting communities from similar incidents. Support services are available through the Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) Office at 1-855-488-6423.
