BURLINGTON, VT – At the invitation of U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will deliver keynote remarks at the 2nd Leahy Center Environmental Summit in Burlington, Vermont on Friday. The theme of this year's summit is “Climate Change Resilient, Floodwater Smart.”
In the wake of destructive flooding along Lake Champlain and throughout Vermont, Secretary Jewell will discuss Interior's responsibilities in the Obama Administration's Climate Action Plan , including the role sound science should play in shaping public policy, especially related to coastal resiliency measures and landscape-level planning. After her remarks, Jewell will take questions from the audience and local news media.
Immediately following the discussion, Secretary Jewell and Senator Leahy will visit a U.S. Geological Survey lake gage on the Burlington waterfront that has been an important tool in measuring lake levels for more than 100 years.
