WASHINGTON – On Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will join White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) Director John Holdren, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Director Suzette Kimball, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Director Willie May and other federal agency staff, state government representatives, and stakeholders at a White House Summit on earthquake resilience.
Secretary Jewell will deliver remarks to highlight progress on hazard resilience, including the continued development of an earthquake early warning system created by USGS, university, state and private sector partners. Later in the day, USGS Director Kimball will participate in a panel discussion that will detail how the system was created and what the next phase will be for making it operational.
Last fall, Secretary Jewell participated in a Great ShakeOut drill in Washington state as part of a global education campaign to help people prepare for earthquakes. The ShakeOut – the largest public safety drill in the world with over 43 million global participants in 2015 – is one component of a next-generation approach to help encourage earthquake preparedness.
