WASHINGTON, D.C. – On the heels of her major speech outlining her conservation priorities for the Department, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will travel to California for a multi-day trip to launch her ambitious youth initiative and to hold a public meeting on local conservation efforts.
On Thursday, November 7, Jewell will be at Crissy Field in San Francisco to kick-off a public-private initiative to engage the next generation through education, employment and volunteer opportunities on public lands. Specifically, by 2017, Interior will work to provide educational opportunities to at least ten million of the nation's K through 12 students annually; engage one million volunteers in support of public lands; and provide 100,000 work and training opportunities to young people. Jewell will be joined by leaders in San Francisco's business, health, education and conservation communities for the announcement and for a service project at Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
On Thursday evening, Jewell will offer remarks at the Commonwealth Club of California regarding her vision to strengthen our economy and ensure that we pass along our nation's rich conservation legacy. On Friday, November 8, Jewell will hold a public listening session to hear the community's vision to celebrate and protect Point Arena Stornetta Public Lands , a significant and scenic area along the Mendocino coastline in Northern California. Administered by the Bureau of Land Management, the area provides opportunities for outdoor recreation and important wildlife habitat. Jewell will be joined by Congressman Jared Huffman, who, along with Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer and Congressman Mike Thompson, has introduced legislation to include the area in the California Coastal National Monument.
