SHARPSBURG, Md. – On Wednesday, Sept. 30, U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Interior Michael Connor will join the Civil War Trust and other conservation leaders at Antietam National Battlefield to make a preservation announcement. The battle of Antietam, fought Sept. 17, 1862, resulted in the bloodiest day of combat in American history.
In his remarks, Deputy Secretary Connor plans to emphasize the importance of historic preservation programs, including the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which will expire on September 30 without action from Congress.
The Land and Water Conservation Fund uses royalties from federal oil and gas leases to provide money to federal, state and local governments for conservation and recreation projects. The Fund is also one of the most important tools for preserving American history and has resulted in more than 21,000 acres of battlefields and cultural sites saved.
