WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, April 24, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Acting Administrator Dan Tangherlini will announce that Interior will be the first federal agency to update its federal fleet with hybrid vehicles as part of GSA's new initiative to replace an aging federal fleet with hybrid vehicles.

Interior and GSA will partner to replace up to 300 gasoline and alternative fueled vehicles with hybrids. This will replace nearly a third of the vehicles owned by the Department under consideration.

“We are excited to be the first to partner with GSA on this important initiative to make our vehicles more fuel efficient,” said Jewell. “We will target replacement where it makes the most sense and has the greatest return on investment. This is a simply a good business decision that will benefit not only our bottom line, but reduce our carbon emissions as well.”

“Providing a hybrid federal fleet is an essential part of GSA's commitment to making government agencies as efficient and effective as possible,” said Tangherlini. “At a time when government needs to make every tax dollar count, GSA is committed to creating more energy efficiency and cost-saving opportunities like the fleet consolidation program that make government smarter and reduce our environmental footprint.”

GSA on Monday announced its Fleet Consolidation program to give federal agencies the opportunity to replace their aging fleets with hybrid vehicles. Through this initiative GSA expects to expand their number of hybrid vehicles by up to 10,000. GSA will fund the total incremental cost to replace consolidated vehicles with new hybrid sedans.

Jewell and Tangherlini will make the announcement in Washington D.C.'s Rawlins Park where OPM, GSA and DOI are hosting an Earth Day event with recycling opportunities and fuel efficient car demonstrations.
