PORTLAND, ORE. – U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell next week will travel to Oregon to promote the outdoor recreation economy and give the keynote address at the Oregon Business Association’s (OBA) Annual Statesman Dinner, where U.S. Senator Ron Wyden will be honored as the 2015 Statesman of the Year.
On Tuesday, Secretary Jewell and Senator Wyden will tour Chris King Precision Components, a local business that manufactures bike components for companies around the world. Jewell and Wyden will also host a roundtable discussion with business and community leaders on the value of the outdoor recreation economy for Oregon and the importance of the highly successful Land and Water Conservation Fund.
The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) was established more than 50 years ago to invest in our nation’s land, water and wildlife heritage. The LWCF has helped provide access to recreation, hunting and fishing sites, alongside protecting natural space and cultural sites, for the benefit of current and future generations. The Fund, which expired on September 30 and requires action from Congress to reinstate, has contributed approximately $294 million to the State of Oregon. Nationwide, the outdoor recreation industry generates $646 billion in consumer spending each year, including $12.8 billion in Oregon.
