Secretary Jewell to Announce Major Step to Ensure Safe, Responsible Offshore Oil and Gas Development - Archive

WASHINGTON – Today, Thursday, April 14, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement Director Brian Salerno will hold a press conference call to discuss a significant milestone in ensuring that oil and gas operations on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf are conducted safely and responsibly.

On April 13, 2015, Secretary Jewell announced proposed well control regulations, overseen by Interior’s Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, to better protect human lives and the environment from oil spills. The proposed regulations build upon a series of offshore oil and gas reforms after the Deepwater Horizon tragedy and were developed after a thorough evaluation of recommendations from industry groups, equipment manufacturers, federal agencies, academia and environmental organizations.
