MEXICO CITY – On November 12-13, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally will travel to Mexico City, Mexico leading the U.S. delegation to the 2015 Ministerial Summit of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO). GEO is co-chaired by China, the European Commission, South Africa and the United States. The Ministerial gathers every three years to discuss top priorities including addressing challenges of agriculture, biodiversity, climate, disasters, ecosystems, energy, health, water and weather.
Secretary Jewell will deliver opening remarks at the Ministerial on Friday, Nov. 13, focusing on climate data and transparency, highlighting information sharing among international partners to help countries make informed, sustainable land management decisions in the face of a changing climate. She will also lead a variety of working sessions designed to produce commitments on open data and transparency, especially as it relates to sound science and information sharing to aid in landscape level planning for development and conservation.
While in Mexico, Secretary Jewell will also participate in bi-lateral meetings with Mexico’s Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources Rafael Pacchiano Alamán and Secretary of Energy Pedro Joaquin Coldwell to discuss issues of mutual importance including wildlife, land management and water resources.
Established in 2005, GEO provides a forum for international coordination of Earth observation assets and strategies. 100 Member States , including the European Commission, are participating in the current summit.
