Secretary Jewell to Lead Climate Resilience Discussions at International Climate Talks in Paris - Archive

WASHINGTON – U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell is in Paris, France this week to attend the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties (UNFCCC). This year’s conference aims to achieve an agreement on commitments to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions starting in 2020, and will adopt guidance on related issues such as climate adaptation.

On Tuesday, Dec. 1, Secretary Jewell will deliver opening remarks and lead a panel discussion on what the United States is doing to help prepare communities and the ecosystems they depend on for the impacts of climate change, even as we take historic efforts to curb carbon pollution. The discussion will focus on U.S actions to enhance climate resilience and adaptation planning in as areas as diverse as Alaska to the Pacific Islands, including the Republic of the Marshall Islands, for which Interior administers federal assistance. On Wednesday, Dec. 2, Jewell will lead a panel discussion about innovative ways countries are addressing climate change in diverse landscapes such as coastal mangroves, wetlands and agricultural lands. The discussion will focus on ways governments and their partners can mitigate climate change effects while generating additional benefits such as increasing resilience, biodiversity and agricultural productivity. Jewell will also attend working sessions to discuss international progress and goals related to climate change.
