NAPA, Calif. – On Friday, Dec. 19, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will join U.S. Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-5), as well as other federal, state and local officials in a visit to the Berryessa-Snow Mountain region in north central California. Jewell will attend Congressman Thompson's public meeting to hear about the community's vision for the management of public lands, including the Congressman's proposal to designate the region a National Conservation Area.
The Berryessa-Snow Mountain region is located less than 100 miles outside of California's Bay Area and stretches from Putah Creek down below Lake Berryessa and across the expansive area of Cache Creek and up to the peak of Snow Mountain. This region is home to a diversity of wildlife, including tule elk, bald and golden eagles, black bears, as well as a variety of butterfly and rare plant species. This region is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, including hiking, kayaking, hunting and fishing and includes important sources of drinking water and irrigation for neighboring communities.
At the invitation of the Congressman Thompson, Jewell will join him, Congressman John Garamendi, USDA Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment Robert Bonnie and U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell, as well as other state and local stakeholders at the public listening session. The community meeting will take place Friday at 2pm PST at Napa Valley College.
